Adventures in New Construction

Although my program at the North Bennet Street School is geared towards historical buildings and traditional building methods, we recently had the opportunity to build a new shed for a client. The new shed employs modern "stick framing" which uses dimensional lumber like 2x4s and plywood sheathing. The shed houses a large dust collection system for a commercial woodshop in the industrial Charlestown neighborhood of Boston.

I kept busy on the job site by jumping-in on framing up the walls, cutting rafters, roofing, siding, and adding finish trim. It was interesting to work with modern building materials like asphalt shingles, cement board siding, and pre-made doors and windows. In the end, I think we did a great job of meeting the clients needs for a modern utilitarian building while adding some traditional design elements like the custom barn doors and moldings.
