Today I had the unique opportunity to do some work on a tiny private island off the coast of Salem, MA. Less glamorous than Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket, the island is a small collection of rustic cottages joined by grassy paths sans electricity, sewage, or running water.
The days objective was to jack up and add a support beam under a section of a leaning deck at one of the cottages. The work was straightforward but exhausting as framing work tends to be. In a fitting tribute to the simplicity and utility of hand tools, I used my cross-cut saw to finish cutting braces after our battery operated saw ran out of juice.
Walter, the owner of the Essex Restoration owns the ferry boat that goes out to the island, so we the company does a fair amount of work on the island. I have to give him credit for the creative use of a tractor to move tools and materials around the little island. Pictures below.
